Un’altra giornata calda e soleggiata sul canale ieri. Siamo stati davvero fortunati, perché oggi il tempo è cambiato radicalmente: è grigio, freddo e piovoso. Speriamo che il bel tempo torni per la prossima edizione di El Mercatel – che sarà l’ultima prima della pausa invernale. Si terrà il 2 novembre, quindi non mancate!

Another warm, sunny day on the canal yesterday - we were really lucky as today the weather has changed radically and it's grey, cold and rainy. Here's hoping that the good weather returns for the next session of El Mercatel - which will be the last before the winter break. It's on  November 2nd, so don't miss it.

Tra le piante che proponevo questa settimana c’erano: piante a fioritura autunnale come viole del pensiero e ciclamini; piante da interno come nastrino, pothos, edera e tradescantia (erba miseria), e una selezione di succulente. Some of the things I was offering this week included: autumn flowering plants like pansies and cyclamen, house plants like spider plants. pothos and ivy, tradescantia and a range of succulents. I sold a lot of them but I'll have more ready for Sunday 2nd. So if any of them interest you particularly, just click on the links.

Ora che le temperature stanno scendendo, sarà presto il momento di pensare a proteggere le piante delicate che vuoi lasciare all’aperto, in giardino, sul balcone o sul davanzale. Puoi portarle in casa, ma probabilmente non hai spazio per tutte. Un’alternativa è usare un telo da giardino (tessuto non tessuto)  — ne ho parlato in dettaglio qui.

Lo propongo in dimensioni di 150 × 150 cm: è sufficiente per coprire una lunga fioriera rettangolare sul balcone, ma si può anche tagliare facilmente in pezzi più piccoli per coprire altri contenitori.

Now that temperatures have started to drop, it's time to start thinking about how you'll protect your plants during the winter months. You can bring them inside, but you may noy have room. An alternative is to consider covering them with garden fleece to protect them from the very cold winter temperatures - I wrote about it in detail here. I’m offering it in a size of 150 × 150 cm - that's  enough to cover a long rectangular planter on the balcony, but it can also be easily cut into smaller pieces to cover other containers.

Ma ho anche varie piante più resistenti che possono restare all’aperto tutto l’inverno (come le viole del pensiero e i ciclamini),  semi che germogliano felicemente se seminati in novembre (e che daranno fiori prima se seminati ora invece di aspettare la primavera), e una gamma di vasi decorativi.

But I do have various hardier plants which can stay outside all winter (like pansies and cyclamen), seeds which happily grow if sown in November (and which will give you earlier flowers if you sow them now rather than waiting till spring), and a range of decorative pots.

Il bel tempo può sembrare una cosa positiva, ma la mancanza di pioggia ha fatto sì che la qualità dell’aria a Milano e nelle aree circostanti peggiorasse notevolmente. The good weather may seem positive, but the lack of rain has meant that the air quality in Milan and the surrounding areas has worsened severely. I've blogged before about how houseplants can improve the quality of air in your home, and how plants outside can at least contribute to absorbing the pollution in the air - see here and here for a detailed account.

Siamo solo a metà ottobre, ma con solo l'ultimo  appuntamento di El Mercatel rimasto prima della fine dell’anno è già tempo di pensare al Natale!  Troverete una varietà di biglietti d’auguri e materiali per realizzare le vostre decorazioni natalizie: acquistandoli ora, vi risparmierete la solita corsa frenetica dell’ultimo minuto.

And in addition, it's not too early to start thinking of Christmas. Next time I'll have a range of Christmas cards, and various items you can use to make your own decorations which, if you buy them now, will mean you avoid a stressful last minute rush.
