Vuoi comprare qualcosa a El Mercatel? Porta i contanti! / Want to buy something at El Mercatel? Bring cash!

Ti sei mai chiesto perché a El Mercatel non ci siano prezzi esposti? O perché la maggior parte dei venditori non accetti pagamenti elettronici? È legale?
La risposta è sì. El Mercatel non è un mercato commerciale, ma è ufficialmente riconosciuto come un mercato di baratto di oggetti di piccolo valore, e tutti gli espositori sono “hobbisti”. Il mercato è registrato presso il Comune di Milano e, ogni anno, i partecipanti presentano un modulo con l’elenco di ciò che intendono vendere. Alcuni prodotti non sono ammessi: ecco perché, ad esempio, non troverai mai bancarelle di cibo.

Have you ever wondered why there are no prices displayed at El Mercatel? Or why most of the stallholders don't accept electronic payments? Is it legal?  Yes -  El Mercatel  is not a commercial market but is officially a market for the barter of objects of small value, and all the stallholders are "hobbyists".  The market is registered with the Comune di Milano, and each year the stallholders submit a form stating what they will be selling. Some products are not admitted - which is why, for example, you won't find any food stalls.

E proprio per questo motivo non si applica l’obbligo dei pagamenti elettronici: non siamo aziende. Anzi, va bene così, perché ci sono giornate in cui non si vende nulla, e di certo nessuno di noi finirà mai a insidiare Elon Musk nella classifica dei più ricchi del pianeta. Siamo lì soprattutto per il piacere di proporre oggetti che ci divertiamo a creare nel tempo libero, di trascorrere una giornata all’aria aperta, e di chiacchierare con gli altri espositori o con chi passa di lì. Quindi non aver timore di fermarti a scambiare due parole, anche se non compri nulla.

That's why we're outside the usual requirement for electronic payments - we're not businesses. Just as well, as there are days when some of us sell nothing at all, and certainly none of us are ever going to threaten Elon Musk's position amongst the richest on the planet. We're mostly there for the pleasure of selling products we enjoy making in our spare time, of enjoying a day spent in the fresh air, and of chatting to both the other stallholders and passers.by - so never be afraid to stop and chat, even if you don't buy anything.

Torniamo però a quella parola: “baratto”. Ufficialmente al mercato non esistono prezzi fissi, e quindi non possono essere esposti. Ovviamente ogni espositore ha in mente un prezzo minimo, che copra almeno i materiali, il lavoro e un piccolo margine. Ma i miei anni di lavoro in Medio Oriente, prima della pensione, mi hanno insegnato che il famoso detto “tutto è negoziabile” è assolutamente vero. Perciò sentiti libero di contrattare!

But back to that word "barter". Officially there are no fixed prices on the market, so none can be displayed. Obviously every stallholder will have in mind a minimum price per product which covers the cost of materials, the work involved, and a bit of profit. But working in the Middle East for some years before I retired taught me the truth of the saying "everything is negotiable", so feel free to barter. 

Come funziona dipende da ciascun espositore, ma ecco alcuni esempi delle formule che io, personalmente, sono felice di proporre (solo esempi):

• se compri almeno cinque delle stesse piantine invece di una sola, ne paghi solo quattro;

• se acquisti insieme piantine e i loro vasi ornamentali, ci sarà uno sconto sul prezzo totale;

• se prendi qualcosa di relativamente costoso, potrei offrirti una piantina più piccola come omaggio.

How this will happen will depend on the stallholder, but here are a couple of ways (just examples) I'm personally happy to discount the prices....

• if you buy at least five of the same plants rather than just one, you'll pay for only four.
• if you buy plants together with their ornamental pots, there will be a discount on the total price.
• if you buy something relatively expensive, I may offer you the choice of a smaller plant as a "freebie"

E che ne pensi di uno scambio di piante?
Se hai piante, vasi decorativi o altri oggetti legati al giardinaggio che vorresti scambiare con qualcosa che sto offrendo, è possibile. Ma fammelo sapere prima, per favore. Lascia un commento qui sotto, preferibilmente con una foto, indicando i dettagli del tipo, della dimensione ecc. della pianta o dell’oggetto, oltre a quello che vorresti ricevere in cambio da me. (Vedrai una selezione delle piante che vendo nei post precedenti, ma pubblicherò più vicino a domenica con i dettagli di ciò che è attualmente disponibile – inclusi alcuni nuovi arrivi.) Ti risponderò dicendoti se sono interessata, e se poi mi comunichi a che ora visiterai il mercato (preferibilmente verso le 10 o le 11), porterò l’oggetto per te e lo terrò da parte fino al tuo arrivo.

Non vedo l’ora di scoprire cosa hai da proporre!

And what about a plant swap? If you have plants, decorative pots or other gardening related items that you'd like to swap for something which i'm offering, that's also a possibility. But let me know first please. Leave a comment below, preferably with a photo, and giving details of the type, size etc of the plant or whatever, plus what I have that you'd like to swap it/them for (You'll see a selection of the plants I sell in previous posts, but I'll be posting closer to Sunday with details of what's currently available - including a few new things.) I'll reply telling you if I'm interested, and if you then tell me what time you'll be visiting the market (preferably around 10 or 11am) will bring it for you and keep it till you arrive.
