Le previsioni del tempo per questa domenica sono ancora buone, quindi El Mercatel tornerà come sempre lungo la Martesana – dalle 10 del mattino con le bancarelle situate a circa 100 metri dall’imbocco del naviglio in via Melchiorre Gioia.

The weather forecast for this Sunday is still good, so El Mercatel will  be back on the Martesana as usual - from 10am with the stalls starting just after the Melchiorre Gioia end of the canal.

È decisamente il momento di pensare alle tue piante da appartamento – averne qualcuna qua e là in casa aggiunge un tocco di colore e offre anche altri benefici, come contribuire a purificare l’aria. Porterò alcune piante che possono crescere in terra, ma che si trovano bene anche in acqua. Tra queste ci sono:

It's definitely time to be thinking about your houseplants now - having a few here and there in the house will add a bit of colour as well as having other benefits like helping to clean the air. I'll be bringing a few which can all be grown in soil, but are also quite happy growing in water. These include :

Tradescantia (Erba Miseria), che aiuta a filtrare comuni inquinanti domestici come formaldeide, benzene e toluene, e aggiunge anche umidità attraverso la traspirazione, riducendo così la secchezza dell’aria. Nel vaso di ceramica bianca l’ho abbinata al Pothos, entrambi coltivati in acqua – adoro la combinazione di colori, anche se la tradescantia ha bisogno di più luce del pothos, quindi bisogna fare attenzione a dove le si colloca. Attenzione con entrambe se avete animali domestici, perché sono tossiche.

Tradescantia which helps filter common indoor pollutants like formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene, and also adds humidity through transpiration, which can reduce dryness in the air. In the white ceramic jar I've mixed it with Pothos, both growing in water - I love the combination of colours, although tradescantia does need more light than Pothos so you have to be careful where you place them. Be careful with both of them if you have pets though, as they are both toxic.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) è una delle piante più efficienti nel rimuovere composti organici volatili come formaldeide, benzene, xilene e toluene. Questi si trovano in prodotti per la pulizia, mobili, tappeti, vernici e vengono emessi anche da fornelli e scaldabagni a gas. Il pothos tollera anche condizioni di scarsa luminosità, quindi è ottimo per le stanze più buie che ricevono poca luce naturale.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is one of the most efficient plants at removing volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, benzene, xylene, and toluene. These can be found in cleaning products, furniture, carpets, paint and are also emitted by gas cookers and water heaters. Pothos will tolerate very low light and so is great for darker rooms which get little natural light. 

Nastrino (Chlorophytum comosum) è particolarmente efficace nel rimuovere formaldeide e monossido di carbonio dall’aria. I gatti possono essere tentati di mangiarle e possono causare lievi disturbi gastrointestinali, ma non sono considerate tossiche. Quella nella foto cresce in terra, ma come tutte queste piante si adatta bene anche in acqua.

Spider plants  (Chlorophytum comosum) are particularly good at removing formaldehyde and carbon monoxide from the atmosphere. Cats may be tempted to eat them and they can cause mild tummy upsets, but they are not classified as toxic. The one in the photo is growing in soil, but like all of these they're fine in water too.

L’edera (Hedera helix) è indispensabile se (come me) avete una stanza in casa o in appartamento che, magari perché dà su un muro esterno o perché vi stendete il bucato ad asciugare, tende a diventare umida e quindi a favorire la muffa. È molto efficace contro le spore di muffa presenti nell’aria, oltre che contro benzene e formaldeide, ma ha bisogno di buona luce ed è anch’essa tossica per gli animali domestici.

Ivy (Hedera Helix) is a must-have if (like me) you have a room in your house or flat which, maybe because it's on an outside wall or is where you hang your washing to dry, is prone to damp and therefore mould. They are very effective against airborne mold spores, as well as benzene, and formaldehyde, but do need good light and, again, can be toxic for pets.

E come tutte le piante, tutte contribuiscono a migliorare la qualità dell’aria assorbendo anidride carbonica e rilasciando ossigeno.

And like all plants, they all improve the quality of the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.

Come sempre, cercherò di portare ogni tipo di pianta in diverse dimensioni al mercato, così che qualunque sia lo spazio a disposizione ci sia qualcosa per voi. Se desiderate una pianta piccola ma non sapete come mantenerla di quella dimensione – basta chiedere.

As always, I'll try to bring each type of plant in different sizes to the market, so that whatever space you have there's something for you. If you want a small plant but aren't sure how to keep it small - just ask.

Oltre a queste piante da appartamento, porterò anche un’ampia varietà di succulente e – se volete coltivarle da voi – semi da piantare in ottobre. Sì, anche in questo periodo dell’anno è necessario seminare fiori e ortaggi per i mesi invernali e per i primi mesi del prossimo anno!

In addition to these houseplants, I'll be bringing a wide range of succulents and - if you want to grow your own - seeds to plant in October. Yes, even at this time of year, you need to be sowing flowers and vegetables for the winter months and early months of next year!

Poi ci sarà una selezione di viola del pensiero e ciclamini – fiori ideali per l’autunno. Entrambi continueranno a fiorire fino a Natale (quelli della foto stanno già producendo nuovi boccioli) e, sebbene le viole si prendano una pausa nei mesi più freddi, in primavera torneranno a fiorire. Le mie, quest’anno, sono fiorite fino a giugno.

Then there will be a selection of pansies and cyclamen - ideal autumn flowers. They'll both go on flowering until Christmas ( the ones in the photo are already pushing up mew buds) and though the pansies will pause a bit during the colder months, in spring the flowers will be back. Mine flowered until June this year.

La maggior parte delle piante, però, entrerà in riposo vegetativo durante l’inverno, e molte soffrono se la temperatura scende troppo. Alcune delle piante più delicate dovrebbero già essere al riparo in casa (vedi il post precedente), ma entro dicembre potrebbe essere necessario proteggere anche quelle che lasciate su balcone, davanzale o – se siete abbastanza fortunati da averne uno – in giardino. Si trovano mini-serre adatte anche a un balcone, ma un’altra alternativa è il tessuto non tessuto da giardinaggio.

Most plants, though, will be going dormant over the winter, and many suffer if the temperature falls too low. Some of the more tender plants should already be indoors (see the last post), but by December it may be necessary to protect even the ones that you leave on your balcony, windowsill or - if you're lucky enough to have one - in your garden. You can find mini-greenhouses even suitable for a balcony, but another alternative is garden fleece. 

Questo telo protegge le piante dal freddo mantenendole al caldo, ma allo stesso tempo lascia entrare la luce e uscire l’umidità – quindi non c’è il rischio che muoiano per mancanza o eccesso di una delle due cose, come accadrebbe invece se le copriste con un sacchetto di plastica. Lo svantaggio è che di solito viene venduto in grandi quantità – ad esempio, un minimo di 15 metri quadrati (10 m x 15 m). Va benissimo se volete coprire un intero balcone pieno di piante, ma è davvero troppo se avete solo qualche vaso su un davanzale esterno. Per questo lo venderò anche in dimensioni ridotte – ideali per coprire singoli vasi o i classici contenitori rettangolari che spesso si appendono alle ringhiere del balcone.

Garden fleece keeps your plants warm, but at the same time lets light in and humidity out - so there's no chance of your plants dying because of lack of one or too much of the other - as there would be if, say, you covered them with a plastic bag.  The disadvantage is that it's usually sold in large quantities - for example, a minimum of 15 square metres (10m x15m). That's fine if you want to cover an entire balcony full of plants, but far too much if you only have a few on an external windowsill. So I'll be selling it in smaller dimensions - ideal for covering individual pots or the type of rectangular containers that are often hung from balcony railings.

E se non bastasse, avrò anche una selezione di vasi decorativi per contenere le piante – terrari in vetro, vasi in ceramica, cestini in vimini e altri ancora. Tutti possono essere venduti singolarmente oppure insieme alle piante che scegliete per abbinarli – in questo caso ci sarà un piccolo sconto 😊

And if that's not enough, I'll also have a selection of decorative pots to keep the plants in - glass terrariums, ceramic pots wicker trays and others. All of them can be sold individually or together with the plants you select for them - in which case there will be a small discount 😊

Un piccolo avviso però: piante e vasi sono pesanti, e visto che devo portare tutto al mercato a mano, non posso mai portare tutto. Quindi, se c’è qualcosa che desiderate in particolare, lasciate semplicemente un commento qui sotto indicando cosa vi interessa e (più o meno) a che ora passerete a prenderlo. Io sarò lì dalle 10 alle 16 circa e, se mi avvisate, porterò quello che vi serve e lo terrò da parte fino all’orario che mi avete indicato.

A word of warning though - plants and pots are heavy, and given that i have to take everything to the market by hand, I can never take everything. So if there's anything you particularly want, just leave a comment in the box below saying what it is and (roughly) what time you'll be coming to pick it up. I'll be there from about 10am to 4pm and if you let me know, will take what you want and save it until the time you've stated.
