Le edizioni di settembre di El Mercatel sono state calde e soleggiate l’anno scorso – speriamo sia lo stesso domenica!
The September sessions of El Mercatel were warm and sunny last year - here's hoping it's the same on Sunday!
Ma finora tutto bene – le previsioni meteo annunciano una giornata calda e soleggiata, con temperature che saliranno fino a 28° nel pomeriggio. Tuttavia, è prevista pioggia per la notte e per lunedì: se dovesse arrivare prima, ci potrebbero essere problemi. Ma dita incrociate e, finché non piove, saremo lì dalle 10.00 alle 17.00 come al solito – anche se io potrei esserci solo fino all’ora di pranzo. Ovviamente aggiornerò questo man mano che la settimana procede e le previsioni del tempo cambiano, quindi torna a controllare. Ma se il tempo regge, perché non venire a fare una passeggiata di inizio autunno? – chissà quanti altri begli appuntamenti domenicali avremo ancora in questa stagione.
But so far, so good - the weather forecast for next Sunday is for a warm, sunny day with temperatures rising to 28° in the afternoon. . However, rain is forecast for the night and for Monday, so if it moves forward there may be problems. But fingers crossed and, as long as it's not raining, we'll be there from 10.00.17.00 as usual - though I may only be there up to lunchtime. Obviously I'll update this as the week goes on and the weather forecast changes, so check back. But as long as the weather holds, why not come for an early autumn walk - who knows how many more nice Sundays we'll have this autumn.
Che cosa venderò? La foto qui sopra mostra alcune delle piante che porterò con me – anche se ce ne saranno molte altre. Tante, come i cactus e le altre succulente, sono quelle che ho quasi sempre: piante perenni, resistenti a tutte le stagioni, non legate a un solo periodo dell’anno. Ma ora è autunno, i fiori estivi stanno gradualmente appassendo, ed è il momento di dare nuovo colore al vostro giardino, balcone o davanzale. Che ne dite di qualche ciclamino o di qualche viola del pensiero? I ciclamini continueranno a fiorire felicemente almeno fino a Natale, e le viole fioriranno per tutto l’autunno, si fermeranno nei mesi più freddi e poi torneranno a fiorire in primavera. Quest’anno, le mie hanno fiorito di nuovo da febbraio a giugno.
What wil I be selling? The photo above shows some of the plants I'll have with me - though there will be plenty of others. Lots of them, like the cacti and other succulents, are those that I have almost always - they are perennial, all-weather plants, not specific to one season. But it's autumn now, the summer flowers are gradually dying off, and it's time to give your garden, balcony or windowsill dome new colour. So what about some cyclamen or some pansies? The cyclamen will happily go on flowering until at least Christmas, and the pansies will flower happily all autumn, pause in the coldest months, and then bounce back in the spring. This year, mine were flowering again from February to June.
Viola del pensiero – una foto dalla selezione dell’anno scorso. Non sono ancora pronti tutti i colori, ma questa domenica avrò sicuramente alcuni gialli e bianchi, e le altre nelle settimane successive.

Come sempre, le piante possono essere acquistate singolarmente nei loro vasi, oppure in combinazioni dentro contenitori decorativi – in ceramica, vetro o vimini. E cerco di portare esempi di varie dimensioni – piccoli, medi e grandi (guarda le due piante di coleus al centro della seconda foto qui sopra) – così che ci sia qualcosa adatto a qualsiasi spazio abbiate. Come diciamo in inglese: c’è sempre posto per un’altra pianta!
As always, the plants can be bought individually in their own pots, or in combination in decorative containers - ceramic, glass, wooden or wicker. And I try and bring examples of various sizes - small, medium and large (look at the two coleus plants in the middle of the second photo above - so that there's something to fit into whatever space you have. As we say in English : there's always room for one more plant!
Questa tradescantia viola sta molto bene in un cesto bianco appeso. Quella che ho portato la settimana scorsa si è venduta in dieci minuti, ma ne ho un’altra da portare domenica. Se non vuoi la tradescantia ma ti piace il cesto, potresti sostituirla con una pianta ragno, che starebbe altrettanto bene. Oppure, se non vuoi appenderlo, le catenelle si staccano facilmente, lasciando solo il contenitore quadrato.
The purple tradescantia above looks good in a white hanging basket. The one I took last week sold in ten minutes, but I have another to bring on Sunday. If you don't want the tradescantia but like the basket, you could replace it with a spider plant, which would look equally good. Or if you don't want to hang it, the chains are easy to clip off, leaving just the square container.
And here are just a few of the succulents I'll be bringing.
