Cosa c'è di nuovo al Mercatel? / What's new at El Mercatel?

Una calda giornata di sole lungo la Martesana, ma stranamente pochissime persone in giro a passeggiare. Così, all’ora di pranzo, quando comunque c’è sempre tranquillità, ne ho approfittato per dare un’occhiata ad alcune delle altre bancarelle.

A warm sunny day on the Martesana, but strangely very few people out for walks. So at lunchtime, when it's always quiet anyway, I took the opportunity to have a look at some of the other stalls.

Se conoscevi El Mercatel di qualche anno fa, credo che oggi non lo riconosceresti. C’è stato un periodo in cui tutte le bancarelle sembravano gestite da persone che avevano semplicemente portato fuori vecchie cose conservate per anni, nella speranza di liberarsene. Ora è tutta un’altra storia. Quasi tutti i venditori sono artigiani che propongono creazioni proprie o articoli da collezione – dischi in vinile, poster, oggetti d’antiquariato e così via. Ho già parlato di alcuni di loro – vedi qui e qui – ma molti sono nuovi arrivati al mercato quest’anno, e mi sono soffermato in particolare su tre bancarelle.

If you knew El Mercatel from a few years back, I don't think you'd recognise it now. There was a time when all the stalls looked as if their owners had simply brought all the stuff they'd had in store for years and wanted to get rid of. Now it's quite different. Almost all of the stallholders are crafts people selling their own goods or collectors' items - vinyl records, posters, antique items and so on. I've already posted about some of them - see here and here - but a lot of the stallholders are new to the market this year, and I looked in particular at three of them.

La prima è quella di Patrizia, che produce saponi fatti in casa. È una novità assoluta per il mercato. Sono davvero belli.

First Patrizia, who produces homemade soaps. That's something completely new for the market. They look lovely.

Poi c’è Giancarlo, un architetto che scrive romanzi gialli ambientati a Milano. Ha un blog in cui elenca tutte le sue opere, con descrizioni delle trame ed estratti da ciascun libro. Lo trovi qui.

E infine, ma non per importanza, Marina e Luigi, che hanno vissuto in Kenya per trent’anni, ma sono ora tornati a Milano. Hanno sviluppato una tecnica di stampa digitale che permette di trasferire immagini su una pellicola adesiva, successivamente applicata direttamente sul tessuto. Prima della stampa, l’immagine viene elaborata per assumere l’aspetto di un acquerello, con colori tenui e delicati.

And last but not least, Marina and Luigi who lived in Kenya for 30 years, but have now returned to Milan and have developed a digital printing technique which enables them to print images onto an adhesive film which is then transferred  directly onto fabric. Before printing, the image is processed to make it resemble a watercolor, with soft and delicate colors.
