Sunday 2nd March EL Mercatel is back / Domenica 2 marzo - il ritorno di El Mercatel

Il primo Mercatel del 2025 è previsto per domenica prossima (2 marzo) e, nelle ultime settimane, sono stata impegnata a sistemare le piante dopo il loro riposo invernale, a seminare e a curare le piantine mentre 

germogliavano. Il mio studio, che funge anche da vivaio, è pieno di piantine che saranno pronte per il trapianto in primavera, tra fine marzo ed aprile – quindi non aspettatevi di vederle questa settimana. Fino ad allora, se ti va di "fare da te", avrò una selezione di semi da piantare a marzo e aprile. Pomodori, cetrioli, peperoni, piselli e fagioli, erbe aromatiche di ogni tipo, girasoli, ipomea, calendule, lunaria, delphinium – e molte altre.

The first Mercatel of 2025 is scheduled for next Sunday (March 2nd), and for the past weeks I've been busy tidying up plants after their winter rest, sowing seeds and nursing the seedings as they germinated. My study, which doubles as a nursery, is full of seedlings that will be ready to transplant in the spring - so look out for them later in March and April. Until then, if you fancy "doing it yourself", I'll have a selection of seeds to plant in March and April. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, peas and beans, herbs of all sorts, sunflowers, ipomea, marigolds, honesty, delphiniums - and many more. 

Molte piante da appartamento sono ancora in casa, poiché le temperature non sono ancora abbastanza alte per lasciarle fuori, ma questa settimana inizierò a portarle all’aperto nel pomeriggio, quando sono previste temperature tra gli 11 e i 13°C, per iniziare ad acclimatarle. Non saranno tutte pronte per il mercato di questa domenica, ma spero che per la seconda settimana (domenica 16), le temperature siano adatte sia per le piante da appartamento più delicate che per alcune delle piantine. 

A lot of the houseplants are still indoors, as the temperatures aren't high enough yet to leave them outside, but this week I shall start taking them out in the afternoons, when temperatures of 11-13° are forecast in order to start hardening them off. They won't all be ready to bring to the market this Sunday, but I'm hoping that by the second week (Sunday 16th), temperatures will be OK for both the more tender houseplants and some of the seedlings. 

Ma avrò comunque molte piante in mostra questa settimana. Ci sarà la solita varietà di piante grasse e alcune piante da interno più resistenti, come la tradescantia e il falangio, ma l'attrazione principale saranno senza dubbio le primule. Le ho di tutti i colori, in combinazioni nei vasi o disponibili per la vendita singola. Il vaso rotondo nella foto starebbe benissimo su un tavolo da balcone, mentre i contenitori rettangolari si adatterebbero perfettamente a un davanzale.

But I'll still have plenty of plants on display this week. There will be the usual range of succulents, and a few hardier houseplants like tradescantia and spider plants, but the main attraction will undoubtedly be the primula. I've got them in all colours, in combinations in pots, or just for individual sale. The round pot in the photo would look great on a balcony table, while the rectangular containers would fit nicely on a windowsill.

Ma il mercato ci sarà? Ieri era prevista pioggia per tutta la domenica – e la pioggia significa niente mercato. Ma oggi le previsioni dicono nuvoloso, ma senza pioggia e con temperature fino a 13°. Quindi, chissà? C'è ancora molto tempo perché le previsioni cambino di nuovo più volte prima di essere definitive. La decisione finale viene solitamente presa sabato sera, poiché a breve termine le previsioni sono di solito affidabili. Aggiornerò questo post in caso di cancellazione, quindi se state pensando di venire, controllate prima di partire. Oppure, se vivete nelle vicinanze, basta guardare fuori dalla finestra!

But will the market take place? Yesterday rain was forecast for the whole of Sunday - and rain means no market. But today the forecast says cloudy, but no rain and temperatures up to 13°. So who knows? There's plenty of time yet for the forecast to change again several times before it's definite. The final decision is usually taken on Saturday evening, as the forecast is usually reliable short term. I'll update this post if there's a cancellation, so if you are thinking of coming, check back before you leave. Or if you live locally, just look out of the window!
