What is "El Mercatel su la Martesana"? / Cos'è "El Mercatel sulla Martesana"?

"El Mercatel su la Martesana" è un piccolo mercato che si tiene quasi ogni domenica  da settembre a dicembre e da marzo a giugno, dalle 10.00 fino alle 17.00. Non ha un tema specifico e potete trovare una gamma di prodotti che includono libri, vinili, bigiotteria, vestiti ed altri prodotti fatti a mano  - e ovviamente sulla mia bancarella le piante ed altri oggetti connessi al giardinaggio.

Dov'è "El Mercatel"?

Il mercato si trova a Milano sul Naviglio Martesana a circa duecento metri da via Melchiorre Gioia (dove l'acqua scorre sottoterra per poi attraversare Milano). Gli autobus 81, 43 e 42 passano nelle vicinanze, o si può raggiungerci a piedi in 10-15 minuti dalla stazione (MM3) di Sondrio. C'è anche una pista ciclabile in Melchiorre Gioia che poi si estende per 30 km lungo il naviglio fino a Cassana d'Adda. Perfetto se avete voglia di fare un'escursione in bicicletta.  Come ho già detto, il mercato comincia quasi all'inizio del naviglio per estendersi verso Viale Rimembranze di Greco. 

Quando si tiene?

El Mercatel si tiene la prima o la prima e la terza domenica di ogni mese, da marzo a luglio e da settembre a novembre. Le date del 2025 sono:

• marzo 2, 10
• aprile 6
• maggio 4, 11
• giugno 1,15
• luglio 6
• settembre 7, 21
• ottobre 5, 19
• novembre 2

Se piove, il mercato sarà automaticamente annullato, quindi incrociamo le dita affinché il tempo resti bello in quelle date!

"El Mercatel su la Martesana" is a small market held most Sundays in the months of September-December and March-June, from 10am to 5pm. There's no specific theme for the market and you can find a range of things including handmade jewellery, clothing and other handicrafts, vinyl records, books - and of course the plants and other items connected to gardening at my stall - Susan's Garden.

Where is it?

It's on the Martesana Canal only a few hundred metres from via Melchiorre Gioia, where the canal goes underground. Buses 81 and 42 (which you can get from the Central Station) pass close by, as does the number 43. It's only a 10-15 minute walk from the Sondrio metro station (MM3) - or you can pick up the 43 0r 81 there if you want. There's also a cycle path all along Melchiorre Gioia, and if you fancy a Sunday bike ride you can cycle down the canal (which runs for 30km to Cassano d'Adda). The market starts a couple of hundred metres from the beginning of the canal at the Melchiorre Gioia end and, on days when everyone is present, extends down towards Viale Rimembranze di Greco.

When is it?

El Mercatel is held on the first or first and third Sunday of every month March-July and September - November. The dates for 2025 are:

• April 6
• May 4, 11
• June 1,15
• July 6
• September 7, 21
• October 5, 19
• November 2

If it's raining, the market is automatically cancelled - so fingers crossed that the weather stays good on those dates!
