Libri e Riviste di Giardinaggio / Gardening Books and Magazines

La cosa fantastica dei libri e delle riviste di giardinaggio è che non passano mai di moda. Le cure di cui una pianta ha bisogno ora sono esattamente le stesse di vent'anni fa, quindi i libri sono ancora validi. Ciò che devi fare per seminare e prenderti cura delle tue piante in un determinato mese non è diverso nel 2023 rispetto al 2003 o al 2013. Naturalmente, c'è sempre Internet, ma consultando articoli sulla stessa pianta su diversi siti, noterai spesso che dicono cose abbastanza diverse. A volte è dovuto alle condizioni locali: le condizioni di cui una pianta ha bisogno in Australia non sono sempre le stesse di quelle in Europa, e infatti, persino in Italia, i requisiti possono variare facilmente da nord a sud. Fare giardinaggio in Alto Adige non è la stessa cosa che fare giardinaggio in Sicilia.

E poi c'è l'altro problema: l'autore del sito potrebbe semplicemente aver commesso un errore. Guarda diversi articoli sulla coltivazione della stessa pianta e noterai quante differenze ci sono in termini di consigli su cose come l'esposizione al sole, le temperature minime tollerate, ecc. Perché? Perché alcuni degli scrittori hanno semplicemente copiato e incollato da altri siti, senza conoscere davvero molto sulla pianta.

Ecco perché tendo a fare affidamento su libri e riviste più che su Internet per la maggior parte delle mie informazioni, specialmente se si tratta di una nuova.

Sulla bancarella avrò quasi sempre una selezione di riviste relative al mese attuale. Se siete interessati a riviste di altri mesi, a riviste di una marca specifica (ad esempio, 'Pollice Verde'), o a pubblicazioni che trattano di una pianta specifica, basta farmelo sapere (lasciate un commento  qui sotto) e le porterò.

The great thing about gardening books and magazines is that they never go out of date. The care that a plant needs now is exactly the same as it was twenty years ago - so the books are still valid. What you need to do to sow and look after your plants in a specific month is no different now in 2023 than it was in 2003 or 2013. Of course, there's always the internet - but looking at articles on the same plant on different sites, you'll often notice that they say quite different things. Sometimes that's because of local conditions - the conditions a plant needs in Australia is not always the same as the conditions it needs in Europe - and in fact, even in Italy requirements may easily change from north to south. Gardening in Alto Adige is not the same as gardening in Sicily.

And then there's the other problem - the writer of the site may simply have got it wrong. Look at a number of articles on cultivating the same plant and notice how many differences there are in terms of advice on things like exposure to sun, minimum temperatures tolerated, etc. Why? Because some of the the writers have simply copied and pasted from other sites, without really knowing much about the plant.

That's why I tend to rely on books and magazines rather than the internet for most of my information - especially if it's a new plant I know nothing about. They're written by experts, edited by experts and you can be much more confident that the information they contain is valid.

Over the last twenty-five years, I've collected a huge collection of gardening books and magazines, all of which I've read over and over again. But I have to "declutter" my flat - and so I'm happy to pass them on. Each week I'll be bringing some books to the Martesana, and also a selection of magazines. Browse through them and decide which ones could help you.

On the stall, I'll nearly always have a selection of magazines relating to the current month.
