Almost everyone who lives in Milan lives in a flat, and without the luxury of a garden. But if you have a balcony, however small, or even just a windowsill, you still have room for a few plants. 

Quasi tutti coloro che vivono a Milano abitano in un appartamento e non hanno il lusso di un giardino. Ma se hai un balcone, anche piccolo, o persino solo un davanzale, hai comunque spazio per qualche pianta.

And as well as making your balcony look much more attractive than when it's empty, flowering plants are essential food for pollinating insects such as bees, butterflies and hoverflies - and those are the insects that then go on to pollinate the plants that provide our food. No pollinators means no food - as you may have noticed if you have had bad results trying to grow courgettes or other vegetables on your balcony. Planting flowers to attract pollinators will help both the environment in general and give you better results with your own cultivation.

E inoltre, oltre a rendere il tuo balcone molto più attraente rispetto a quando è spoglio, le piante fiorite rappresentano una risorsa indispensabile per gli insetti impollinatori come api, farfalle e sirfidi. Questi stessi insetti, infatti, sono fondamentali per l'impollinazione delle piante che producono il nostro cibo. Senza impollinatori, non ci sarebbe cibo: una realtà che avrai notato se hai avuto scarsi risultati nel tentativo di coltivare zucchini o altre verdure sul tuo balcone. Piantare fiori per attirare gli impollinatori non solo favorirà l'ambiente, ma migliorerà anche i tuoi successi nella coltivazione.

There are lots of flowers which can easily be grown on a balcony which attract pollinators. The top picture shows a selection on my balcony which were in flower in April a few years ago. From front to back in the photo - lunaria (honesty), calendula (marigolds) and cheiranthus (wallflowers).  And the list for the year is endless -  petunias, lavender, thyme, sunflowers, borage, chrysanthemums, to name just a few - these all of nectar and pollen-rich flowers and are in all flower at different times - that's important to provide constant nourishment throughout the year. The second photo shows a hummingbird hawk moth enjoying lunch on some of my daisies, and the third (below) chrysanthemums, another member of the daisy family (asteraceae).You can buy all the seeds listed above in spring at Susan's Garden at El Mercatel - or later in the year as potted plants to transplant and grow on wherever you want them.

Esistono molti fiori che si possono facilmente coltivare su un balcone e che attraggono i pollinatori. La foto in alto mostra una selezione dei miei fiori che fiorivano ad aprile di qualche anno fa. Da davanti a dietro, nella foto: lunaria (onestà), calendula (fiorrancio) ed erysimum (fiori di muro). E la lista per l’anno potrebbe continuare all'infinito: petunie, lavanda, timo, girasoli, borragine, crisantemi... solo alcuni che fioriscono in diversi periodi e garantiscono un nutrimento per tutto l'anno. La seconda foto ritrae una falena colibrì che si sta gustando il pranzo su alcune delle mie margherite, e la terza è di crisantemi - un altro membro della famiglia delle margherite (asteraceae). In primavera, al Giardino di Susan a El Mercatel, puoi acquistare i semi di tutti i fiori elencati sopra oppure più tardi nell'anno come piante in vaso da trapiantare e coltivare ovunque tu voglia.
